White Ferns Series Review and Player Ratings

Updated: Oct 24, 2023

The White Ferns tour to Sri Lanka has concluded with the White Ferns taking the One Day series 2-1, whilst Sri Lanka took the T20i series 2-1.

In this article, we will recap the series and also include player ratings for the players.

In a rain-affected first ODI, Sri Lankan took the spoils with Chamari Athapaththu scoring a century to guide her side to victory. With only 28 overs the White Ferns were able to manage 170 runs. Amelia Kerr top-scored for her side with 40 runs and Maddy Green made 39. Sugandika Kumari, Kavisha Dilhari and Inoka Ranaweera all took one wicket for Sri Lanka.

Athapaththu and Vishma Gunaratne saw the Sri Lankans over the line to a nine-wicket, with an opening stand of 159. Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama got Sri Lanka the win with an over to spare. Read the full match report here

In the second ODI, New Zealand batted first. With the full 50 overs for this game, Aotearoa made full use of it with Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr making centuries. They ended up making 329/7 from their 50 overs. Devine made 137, and Kerr 108. Oshadi Ranasinghe took 3 wickets and Udeshika Prabodhani picked up 2. Read the full match report here

With all to play for in the third and final ODI, New Zealand won the toss again and opted to bat first. Unfortunately, there was another rain delay and this meant the game was cut short at the end of New Zealand’s 31 overs. New Zealand got to a total of 127/2 when the rain halted play.

The revised target for Sri Lanka was 196 from 29 overs. Athapaththu blazed her way to a quickfire 140* from 80 to take the series. She was well supported by Nilkashi de Silva who scored 48*. The win gave Sri Lanka a first-ever ODI series victory over Aotearoa. Read the full match report here

After an ODI series defeat, New Zealand needed to stamp their mark on the T20i series. After sending Sri Lanka into bat they were able to restrict them to 106 from the 20 overs. Gunaratne made 26 from Sri Lanka, with Anushka Sanjeewani and Ranasinghe both making 18. Kerr, Eden Carson and Leigh Kasperek all took two wickets with the ball for Aotearoa. Suzie Bates and Kerr worked very well together, with Bates scoring 44 from 47 and Kerr making 34 from 28.

The pair got New Zealand close to victory, but a middle-order collapse gave Sri Lanka hope. Georgia Plimmer was able to get the White Ferns home with 16 from 18. Inoshi Priyadarshani took 3/17, with Prabodhani and Dilhari both taking a wicket.

New Zealand were able to wrap up the T20i series in this game, with Bates and Lea Tahuhu playing big roles. Sri Lanka was once again asked to bat first and had a disastrous start, falling to 14-3 inside the first 4 overs. A rain delay had some benefit for Sri Lanka as Samarawickrama and Hasini Perera were able to pull their side back into the game. They combined for a 50+ run stand. Once they departed Sri Lanka, relied on the tail to get them to a good score, for the last 5 overs de Silva and Sanjeewani got them up to 118/5. Tahuhu took 4/21, with offspinner Eden Carson with one.

Bates and Kerr once again shone for the White Ferns with the pair being able to collaborate well together. Bates top scored with 52 and Kerr made 33. Dilhari and Ranaweera both took a wicket.

With the series locked away New Zealand made three changes for the final game of the series. A new opening partnership between Izzy Gaze and Bates worked well. Unfortunately for the White Ferns, the Bates/Kerr partnership couldn’t quite be replicated in this game.

Devine and Bates came together to get the White Ferns up to a good total, though a lower order collapse restricted New Zealand of runs. Devine top scored with 46 and Bates made 37. Ranaweera took 3 wickets and Kumari got two.

Athapaththu and Samarawickrama smashed the ball all around the park and took Sri Lanka to a ten-wicket win, with Athapaththu making 80 from 47 and Samarawickrama scoring 49.

Sophie Devine - 9/10

Devine had a very good ODI series Batting at four throughout the tournament would have been a bit of a change for her as she usually opens. She scored 194 runs across the three games, with a high score of 137 in the second ODI. She also took three wickets with the ball.

Izzy Gaze - N/A

Gaze didn’t feature in any of the ODIs.

Brooke Halliday - N/A

Halliday played three ODIs but only got two chances with the bat, making a high score of 2 and being not out in the other innings. There she can’t be rated due to not getting a good opportunity. She bowled three overs but didn’t take a wicket. Fran Jonas - 2/10

Jonas did not have a very good ODI series. She bowled 13.4 overs across the series taking one wicket.

Leigh Kasperek - N/A

Bernie Bezuidenhout - 2/10

Like the ODI series, Bezuidenhout just didn’t have a good tour in general, only making 28 runs across two innings with a high score of 24. She was replaced by Izzy Gaze in the final T20i. Bezuidenhout didn’t take any catches in the T20i series but did get a stumping.

She had a high score of 51, but was only able to manage 5 runs from the other two innings. She also took no wickets and bowled 4 overs.

Izzy Gaze - N/A

Gaze only played one game and scored 13 runs, so therefore it is unfair to rate her.

Brooke Halliday - N/A

Like the ODIs, Halliday didn’t get much of a chance with the bat. She made two runs from her only innings. She also bowled three overs going for 16 runs.

Fran Jonas - 1/10

Jonas bowled 6 overs across the T20i series and went for 36 runs. She didn’t take a wicket. Whilst Jonas didn’t have a very good tour she would have taken some learnings to improve on.

Leigh Kasperek - 4/10

Kasperek played two of the T20is and took two wickets. Both those wickets came in the first T20i which was also a return to the New Zealand side for Kasperek.

Amelia Kerr - 7/10
