Wilson, Mair star in Round Five Action of the HBJ Shield

Updated: Dec 10, 2023

Saffron Wilson’s 100 and Rosemary Mair’s 6 wickets were the main highlights in Round Five of the HBJ Shield.

WELLINGTON BLAZE VERSUS AUCKLAND HEARTS - KENNARDS HIRE COMMUNITY OVAL, AUCKLAND

RESULT: WELLINGTON BLAZE WIN BY 157 RUNS

The Auckland bowlers got into the wickets early with Rebecca Burns (2) departing in the first over, Bree Illing getting the wicket.

Jess McFadyen and Caitlin King added 31 runs for the second wicket before Amie Hucker had a wicket and Cate Pedersen got the catch on List A debut for Auckland.

Auckland soon grabbed their third wicket of the day with McFadyen out for 19 in the 14th over with spinner Rishika Jaswal getting her first wicket of the day.

Wellington captain Leigh Kasperek was joined by Kate Chandler and the two of them put on a crucial fourth-wicket partnership from the visitors of 106 runs from 123 balls.

Whilst the Auckland bowlers were keeping their lines tight and not allowing Kasperek and Chandler to score quickly, they still couldn’t get the breakthrough until the 36th over when Chandler was stumped by Elizabeth Buchanan off the bowling of Jaswal for 56 from 71.

Kasperek then carried on her innings before she was bowled by Anna Browning for 73 from 101. In her 141-minute innings, she only scored three boundaries.

Gemma Sims added 29 valuable runs at number 6, but the rest of the lower order of Monique Rees (10), Nicole Baird (0), Hannah Francis (7), and Xara Jetly (4) couldn’t quite see the side over the 250 mark, which is possibly what Wellington would’ve been aiming for.

Kasperek’s 73 and Chandler’s 56 saw Wellington through to 247/8 from their 50 overs with Illing’s and Jaswal’s 2 wickets each being the best figures for their side.

Auckland did not have a perfect start with the ball as they quickly fell to 4/10 inside the first five overs.

Watch the Wellington bowlers take their wickets:

Baird picked up the first wicket with Browning out for a duck before Jetly dismissed Armstrong for 0 from 5 to leave their side at 2/7 after two overs. Saachi Shahri only managed 6 runs with Baird getting a second wicket before Jetly combined with McFadyen to run out Pedersen for 0.

Auckland captain, Prue Catton, and Skye Bowden then had a quality middle-order partnership that put some runs on the board and the two of them worked well to get their side of the position they were in.

When Catton was out in the 19th over, run out by Jetly for 26 from 53, it was not long before the rest of her side were all out.

Olivia Anderson only made 1, Jaswal (3), Hucker (0), Buchanan (3), and Illing (1*) as Auckland’s tail added very little to the total.

Bowden’s 39 from 66 was the highlight for the home team, but Francis, Kasperek, and Williams (who got a wicket on debut) ripped through the lower order.

Auckland finished on 90/10 from 27.5 overs with Wellington taking a 157-run win.

NORTHERN DISTRICTS VERSUS CANTERBURY MAGICIANS - BAY OVAL, MT MAUNGANUI

RESULT: NORTHERN DISTRICTS WIN BY 2 WICKETS

Northern Districts and Canterbury played an exciting fixture at Bay Oval with the home side winning by 2 wickets in a low-scoring match.

Abby Gerken and Frankie Mackay got the visitors off to a fast start with the bat bringing up 21 runs inside the first three overs, but Mackay soon found herself out for 14 with Lucy Boucher picking up the wicket.

Gerken and Jacinta Savage could only add 19 runs in their partnership before Gerken was dismissed by Nensi Patel and Savage was out 5 balls later for 11 with Jesse Prasad trapping her LBW.

Izzy Sharp and Nat Cox put on 35 runs for the fourth wicket but Kayley Knight was able to break through and send Cox back to the pavilion for 18.

Jodie Dean and Sharp were able to keep the runs flowing for their side as they added 39 runs in just over eight overs, but the wicket of Dean for 15 was combined with the wicket of the captain, Laura Hughes for 0 to leave Canterbury now at 118/6, just after the halfway stage of the innings.

Sharp was joined by Gabby Sullivan in the middle and they added 24 runs before Sharp was out for 45 from 55, Nensi Patel getting her second wicket.

Sullivan then had a 29-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Nicola Clayton, but the wicket of Clayton sent Canterbury from 171/8 to 175/10 as they were all out in 43.3 overs.

Sharp had the top score with 45 while Prasad had her best bowling figures of 3/25.

Northern didn’t have the best start with the bat either as Tash Waklein found herself being the first player dismissed for 10, LBW to Sarah Asmussen.

Patel and Caitlin Gurrey added a solid partnership of 54 runs for the second wicket.

Patel was the next player out for 46 from 56, and Jess Watkin found herself out for 14 from 16.

The dismissal of Sam Barriball in the 30th over left Northern going from 130/4 to 162/8, leaving Canterbury with a chance to get back into the game.

Clayton, Savage, and Sullivan all took wickets in this period, but it wasn’t quite enough as Boucher added 23* from 29 to get the Northern side home by 2 wickets with eight ove
