Williamson to miss World Cup Opener

Updated: Nov 14, 2023

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the ICC Cricket World Cup opener. After doing an ACL injury playing for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL earlier this year, it was remarkable that Williamson was included in the squad for the tournament. It has been well known that the Blackcaps were taking Williamson’s injury very carefully and were always looking at it in a long term view.

“Right from the start we’ve taken a long-term view on Kane’s return to play,” coach Gary Stead stated.

He will however feature in the warm-up matches against Pakistan and South Africa. In the match against Pakistan he will play only as a batter, whilst the aim is for him to play bat and field in the second warm-up game.

On Williamason’s recovery and the approach to bringing him back to playing, Stead said that:

“His recovery is tracking well and it’s now a matter of making sure he can cope with the rigours and intensity of international cricket.”

“We’ll continue to take a day by day approach to Kane’s rehabilitation and certainly won’t be putting any pressure on him to return before he is ready.”
