Wellington, Otago, Canterbury Pick Up Wins on Final Day of U19 Tournament

Whilst Auckland didn’t pick up a win they did take out the tournament by two points with Wellington finishing in second.

Northern Districts vs Wellington:

Northern lost an early wicket with Natasha Wakelin falling in the first over for a duck to Anya Birmingham.

Joey Canty and Amelia Harvey were able to see Northern through the rest of the powerplay, however, Canty fell for 6 from 28 balls with Rachel Bryant getting the breakthrough.

Harvey was joined in the middle by Eve Wolland and they were able to massively up with a couple of overs going for ten plus runs.

However, Isla McKenzie struck with two wickets in two balls as Harvey went for a run-a-ball 38 and then Megan Pearson fell next ball.

Elle Archer and Wolland saw Northern over the 100-run mark before a couple of late wickets with Bryant getting Archer for and then Bryant/Nela Ramanathan ran out Aria Mischewski's first ball.

Wolland went past the 50-run mark for herself and this came in 36 balls but she was out to Emma Parker getting her for 51.

Catherine Hardie (1*) and Miah Smith (1*) were the two not-out batters with Northern making 117/7.

Hannah Francis and Ramanathan saw Wellington off to a fast start with the bat as they put on 53 runs for the first wicket before Mia Chatteron struck in her third over of the game to have both openers out for 17 and 28 respectively.

Kate Chandler and Bryant carried on with the work that the openers had laid with a solid 59-run stand in just over eight overs to take Wellington to within a run of victory before Mischewski had Bryant caught and bowled for seven.

Esme Olney-Boyd hit the winning runs for Wellington to give them a solid 7 wickets with more than three overs left.

Auckland vs Otago:

Otago picked up the big wicket of Kate Irwin with Hannah Wilson/Isy Parry running her out for a duck.

Jess Smith then fell not long after for 5 with Louisa Kotkmap getting the wicket to leave Auckland in trouble at 10/2.

Elizabeth Buchanan and Brooke James were able to get the innings back in the right direction as they added 32 runs to get Auckland through the powerplay without losing another wicket.

However, when Zarah Moana got the wicket of Buchanan for 21, Auckland started to lose wickets at regular intervals.

James (19 - run out by Abby Fookes), Holly Lightbourne (3 - out to Chloe Deerness), Anika Todd (7 - out to Katelyn Walton), Katelyn Halliday (7 - out to Deerness), and Leah Watton (3 - out to Deerness) all fell between the score of 55/3 and 76/8.

Issy O’Connell (7), Neena Wollaston (11*), and Anika Tauwhare (4*) saw Auckland through to 97/9 from their 20 overs.

Auckland needed early wickets and did this with Fookes (3) and Parry (0) falling inside the powerplay with Smith and Lightbourne getting the wickets respectively.

Deerness fell halfway through the Otago innings for 12 with Tauwhare getting the wicket.

Georgina McEwan and Wilson were looking threatening as they put on 23 runs in just three overs to drag Otago closer to the target.

Wilson then went for 27 from 38 with Wollaston getting the wicket.

Kotkmap and McEwan nearly saw the side to the required total but both fell with just a couple of runs left to win.

McEwan went for 21 from 16 with Tauwhare getting the wicket whilst Kotkampa fell for 13 with Tauwhare also getting the wicket.

Chloe Scherp (5*) and O’Connor (0*) got the Otago side to a four-wicket win.

Canterbury vs Central Districts:

Canterbury had an electric start with the bat as Sophie Arnold raced to 18 from only seven balls.

Having hit three fours in a row of Aniela Apperley she was then bowled by her and then Dary-Rose Prasad was run out next ball for six to leave Canterbury at 26/2 after two overs.

Izzy Sharp showed her talent as she smashed 14 runs in four balls off Grace Foreman. But it was Foreman who had the last laugh with the wicket of Sharp for 14.

Canterbury soon found themselves at 50/5 as Catherine Hollard got Eloise Borcoski for two and then Vanessa Taylor had Niamh McKenzie trapped LBW for one.

The wickets kept falling for Canterbury with Vanessa Taylor getting Ruby Makeham (9) and Maggie Martin (0).

Sammy Borcoski and Katriel Thomas got Canterbury through the rest of the innings with a 70-run stand for the eighth wicket to take their side to 130/7. Sammy Borcoski finished on 33* and Thomas on 31*.

Central struggled early with the bat as they slipped to six wickets down with only 32 runs on the board.

Apperley (0), Abby Treder (5), and Sophie Campbell (5) all fell before the score hit 20 runs with Sammy Borcoski, Abagail Hotton, and Aine Molony getting the wickets respectively.

Taylor (5), Gretel Fairbrother (1), and Foreman (3) fell soon after to leave CD with six early wickets lost. Hotton got Taylor whilst Thomas had the other two.

Ella Hogan and Reese Drager got the Central innings back on the right track but it was going to be too big of a task for the two of them to guide Central to victory.

Hogan fell with four overs left in the chase with 10 runs to her name and then Lucy Jurlina went for one.

Drager ended on 43* and Hockly on 10*. Central finished on 113/8 which gave Canterbury a 17-run win.
