Claire Crooks’ 45*, Kaitlyn Halliday’s 2-1 and Mollie Drumm’s 3-14 sets Tāmaki Makaurau up for a whopping 96 run win over Te Waipounamu.
Skye Bowden sent her team into bat, opening up alongside Jess Smith.
Te Waipounamu took an early wicket, Smith dismissed by Katriel Thomas off Harriett Cuttance. Unfortunately for the South Islanders, Claire Crooks and Bowden unleashed runs aplenty.
The 82-run partnership was ended by Grace Kitchen just short of the halfway mark, trapping Bowden LBW for 27 off 32.
The bowling lost its discipline, offering wides and no-balls to Crooks and Anika Todd. The batters capitalised, putting up a 72-run onslaught with Tāmaki Makaurau’s innings finishing on 164-3.
Tanya Morrison and Zarah Moana picked up a wicket each, but they were no match for Crooks who put up 45* (57) and Todd’s quick fire 39 off 30.
It was a miserable start for the South Islanders. Kaitlyn Halliday swiped Emily Evans (LBW) and clean bowled Grace Kitchen, giving away just 1 run from the over.
Back-to-back powerplay maidens set Billie East up for her first wicket, assisted by Bowden in the field.
Play was quiet, but economical from an Auckland front. The run rate increased with every over, realistically writing the South Islanders out of it.
Mollie Drumm enforced the breakthrough in the 16th, both Cuttance and Kendrick caught out in her over. Sophie Court bowled top scorer Katriel Thomas for 30, effectively ending the game.
Te Waipounamu were bowled out for 67, never really threatening the 164 target. Tāmaki Makaurau looked strong in all departments, proving too strong on the occasion.
