Otago Sparks vs Northern Brave (W):
Hayley Jensen won the toss for the home side and made themselves bat on a brown tinge surface.
It didn’t take long for the Sparks to continue this good run of form with newly minted opener PJ Watkins and stalwart Suzie Bates building a strong partnership to start the inning. Watkins had to go for 11 off 14 deliveries after trying a ramp shot with a ball going onto hit leg.
Toward the end of the powerplay, Bates used her feet pummeling it straight down Jess Watkin’s throat departing for 26 off 22 balls. The Sparks had two new batters, only just above the 8 ball at the end of the powerplay.
Blakely and Gain got set but when they tried to increase the run rate Blakely was caught at long on for 12 off 17 with it holding in the wind. Inglis only lasted her four balls cutting it straight to point departing for just 6 runs. Gain charged and her head went nowhere near the ball turning away with her getting stumped for 21 off 27 balls.
Felicity Robertson calling Anna Browning through when there was no run was a huge blunder with Browning having to go for 2 off 3 balls. It didn’t help that Hayley Jensen took off for a stupid run when the keeper stood up to the stumps. She had to go for 8 off 8 being run out by Topp assisted by Downes.
Gordon and Carson went out swinging and the Sparks ended on 110/9 after their 20 overs. A target that was well below par on a wicket some spectators described on the day as “a road”.
Jess Watkin and Chamari Athapaththu nearly survived the powerplay being 41/0 after 5 overs until Carson got Athapaththu at long on not getting enough on it having to go for 22 off 17.
It took till the tenth over to get Watkin with her getting caught out at Cow Corner on 41 after she stepped across to the leg side with Hayley Jensen following.
The damage had already been done but Nensi Patet who dropped another crowd catch hit it straight back to Carson scoring 17 off 9 with the Brave needing 14 off 48.
This total was finished with 6 overs to spare and 3 wickets in the bank. The Sparks will need to turn the ship around before their quality form turns to nothing. The Brave looks completely different team to there HBJ selves and will need to keep this coming to make finals.
Otago Volts vs Northern Brave (M):
The Volts elected to bowl on a University Oval road and they paid the price.
No words can be said about Katene Clarke and Joe Carter's inning.
Clarke scored 106 off 65 with 7 4’s and 8 6’s, Carter scored 83 off 49 with 10 4’s and 2 6’s. This ensured the first part of Otago’s retro series with their former players T10 after the matches vs Wellington got off to a poor start.
Both Phillips’ poor fielding had a say too dropping 5 catches in the 20 overs between the brothers. Both ways the batsmen got out was through runouts.
Let’s just say Otago had a massive off day with many misfields and drops leading to the Brave scoring 212 for 2 in 20 overs. Robbie O’Donnell offered 10 off 4 while Brett Hampton scored 5 off 2 both not out.
Otago just trying to bash the ball lost 3 in the powerplay. Dale Phillips (5), Jamal Todd (12) and Glenn Phillips (11) didn’t get a start and went out quicker than a hot potato.
Johnson (25) got a start and couldn’t continue while Carter and Chu chewed away at the Brave’s total quickly and effectively scoring.
When Carter (54) and Chu (44) went a feeling in the short of spectacular crowd kicked in that there was no chance. Lockrose didn’t help much adding 1 leaving Otago in a spot of bother.
With 28 required off the last Georgeson put on a show scoring 16 off the first 3 leaving hope with 3 to come. He was ran out pushing for 2 scoring 28 off 9, with Duffy (1) and Hazeldine (12) closing out the 8-run loss.
If the Brave were 10 runs lighter their bowling choices would have left something to be desired with Fisher bowling the last instead of Wagner costing 19 off it. For the Volts their bowlers couldn’t learn how to take a wicket with the Phillips’ needing a how to catch 101 in the field.
