Central Stags captain Greg Hay has announced that he will retire from cricket following the final match of the Plunket Shield season.
Hay has played 106* First Class matches, representing the Stags on 104 occasions and NZ A on two. He also played 32 List A games (31 for the Stags and one for NZ A) along with 27 T20 matches.
He made his debut for Central in the 2006/07 season playing across all three formats that season. He was not selected between the 2009/10 and 2012/13 seasons but made his recall to the side in the first class and one-day arena memorable. Hay made 486 runs across the 2013/14 first-class season with a high score of 202*. His one-day season that year wasn’t quite as memorable, making 19 runs from two games.
For the following five seasons (2014/15-2018/19) he scored over 500 first-class runs each season including a career best of 226 against Otago.
Hay led the Stags first-class team to victory in 2018/19 and last season, 2023/23. He captained the Stags in 40 first-class matches throughout his career and is Central’s second player to play over 100 matches for the side, behind Matthew Sinclair’s 119 games.
At the time of writing, Hay has passed 7,000 first-class runs for the Stags (7,133) and has a total of 7,231 first-class runs overall. This goes alongside his 1,089 one-day runs and 508 T20 runs. He has a total of 18 FC 100s along with seven OD 50s and 4 T20 50s.
Hay will finish his career against the Otago Volts in the final Plunket Shield match, which is currently ongoing at Napier’s McLean Park.
