Sparks Trash Hinds; Will Young Ton Guides Stags to Big Win

A solid bowling performance has given the Otago Sparks a victory in Napier whilst a Will Young T20 ton guides his side to an important win.

Central Hinds vs Otago Sparks

The Sparks picked up the early wicket of Georgia Atkinson as she fell LBW to Emma Black on the first ball of the game.

Hollie Armitage and Thamsyn Newton steered the Central innings back on the right track as they put on a 25-run stand for the second wicket.

Otago overseas international Linsey Smith did strike in her second over to have the wicket of Newton for eight.

Armitage and Hannah Rowe added a solid 50-run stand for the second wicket with Armitage showing her attacking nature as she raced to 47 from 39 balls.

However, Eden Carson was reintroduced into the bowling attack and struck twice in the over with Armitage falling for 47 and then Mikaela Greig went three balls later for a duck.

Suzie Bates had success in the following over as she bowled Rowe for 16. This followed with Carson grabbing a third wicket as Flora Devonshire was also bowled for two.

Priyanaz Chatterji and Rosemary Mair were able to take the Hinds to near the hundred-run mark in the nineteenth over but Black struck with her second wicket of the day as Chatterji found herself having to walk back to the pavilion with nine runs to her name.

Claudia Green, in her 50th match for the Hinds and Mair, were able to see their side to 115/7 from 20 overs with Green finishing on 7* and Mair on 16*.

The Otago openers of Bella James and Bates were able to carry on their form from the victory that they had against the Northern Brave with an opening stand of 84 runs.

Both players were careful during the first few overs but a 10-run over off Ashtuti Kumar that was followed by 13 runs being taken off Devonshire let them push well past the required rate.

Green did get some success on a milestone match with the opening wicket of James, however, it was just too little too late. James fell for a quality innings of 39 from 33 with Dodd taking the catch behind the stumps.

Felicity Robertson joined the captain in the middle and they saw the Sparks to within 16 runs required of a victory when Robertson was out to Mair for 10.

Polly Inglis (13*) and Bates (52*) got the Sparks to the target with 18 balls to spare.

Central Stags vs Otago Volts:

Otago had early success with the ball with Andrew Hazeldine getting Bayley Wiggins out for one.

However, a massive 108-run stand for the second wicket between Will Young and Dane Cleaver took the game away from Otago.

Both brought up fifties in quick succession after each with Young making his first in 36 balls and Cleaver getting his four balls quicker.

Cleaver was dismissed the following ball after making his fifty with Jake Gibson getting the wicket.

The Volts were able to slightly reduce the Stags scoring rate following the wicket with only three fours made in the four overs that Bruce and Young were in the middle together.

Jacob Duffy took the wicket of Bruce as he looked to up his scoring rate when he found the hands of Gibson for 15.

Josh Clarkson and Young however were able to up the ante with Young being extremely aggressive in the 28 runs that they shared in the middle.

The wicket of Clarkson was a very unfortunate win as he also injured his shoulder and came off the field in pain.

Young brought up his second Super Smash ton in the final over with a six. Doug Bracewell struck a late six before being dismissed on the last ball for 9. Young finishing not out on 101*.

Gibson and Hamish Rutherford looked to get Otago off to a fast start which they did do but after bringing up 20 runs in the first two overs.

They suddenly slipped to 20/2 with Gibson (8) and Dean Foxcroft (0) falling to Bevan Small.

Rutherford and Max Chu did carry on the aggression to take the Volts to just under the 50-run mark when Doug Bracewell got the big wicket of Rutherford for 18.

Chu kept trying to find the boundary but it was Stags captain Bruce who applied pressure for Ajaz Patel to get the wicket of Chu for a solid 34 from 20.

Jayden Lennox then had success a couple of overs later with Dale Phillips being bowled for 16 from 22.

With the run rate climbing massively Ollie White and Llew Johnson tried their best to just attack and White quickly raced to 11 from three.

Small picked up his third wicket of the day as Johnson was bowled for 22.

Patel then three wickets in his final over with Ben Lockrose (1), White (30) and Duffy (0) all falling to Patel’s spin. Hazeldine (1) was also run out by Tom Bruce.

The Stags took an important 52-run victory.
