Sparks just get home, Volts blitz Stags

Vincent Jones and Otis Murray

Central Hinds vs Otago Sparks:

The Otago Sparks have picked up their fourth win of the Super Smash with a clinical performance against the Central Hinds.

It was spinner Eden Carson who led the way with the ball, picking up her second Super Smash five wicket bag, replicating her best figures of 5/18 against the Hinds in 2020.

Central have often struggled for runs at the top order this season, but they got a good start of 38 runs for the first wicket between Hollie Armitage (22) and Kerry Tomlinson (18). The stand was broken by Carson in the eighth over.

Thamsyn Newton managed to make her way to 14 in her 100th Super Smash game before falling to Carson whilst Anna Browning picked up Tomlinson.

Carson went through the Hinds middle order to grab her five wicket haul in the 16th over when she had Georgia Atkinson (0) bowled. She also had picked up Hannah Rowe (9) and Flora Devonshire (5).

Having been going steady at 65/3 when Rowe fell in the 14th over, it looked like that they could push on and make a defendable total. But then hope ended as they fell to 80/7 and then all out for 90.

Emma Black picked up a couple of late wickets to finish with 3/12 whilst Carson, Browning, and Hayley Jensen were the other wicket takers.

The Hinds looked like they may have been able to pull off a stunning win. They had the visitors sitting at 14/2 in the fourth over with Rowe having trapped Felicity Robertson leg before for four and Olivia Gain falling to Claudia Green for nine.

Resistance from Bella James (20) and Caitlin Blakely (13) saw the Sparks through the remainder of the power without loss and through to the end of the ninth over.

Just as the Sparks were gaining the upper momentum they lost both set batters within 12 runs of each other as Devonshire had James and Mair grabbed Blakely.

An important and match winning stand between Polly Inglis (21) and PJ Watkins (16) saw the visitors through to 81/5 when Green grabbed her second wicket of Watkins.

This was followed by Inglis being out to Mair with just four runs required for the win.

Browning (5*) hit the match winning runs on the first ball of the penultimate over for the Sparks to take a four wicket win.

Central Stags vs Otago Volts:

The Stags got sent in by Luke Georgeson and that paid off immediately.

Curtis Heaphy went in 3 balls edging it to Georgeson at slip off Mason Clarke’s bowling playing outside at the 5th/6th stump line.

Dane Cleaver couldn’t do much better trying the ramp shot and not getting enough on it. Clarke caught him at short fine leg, and the Stags were 6/2 after 1.4 overs.

A 67-run partnership between Jack Boyle and Tom Bruce got their side out of a spot of bother. The full toss from Bacon got Bruce mistiming the shot to Georgeson at mid-off.

It didn’t take long for the ball that strayed down the leg side that Boyle stepped across to mistimeing the shot to Matt Bacon at mid-off, he departed for 22 off 22 and the Stags were 88/4 after 10.5 overs.

It took another 4 overs without conceding many to get the wicket of Will Clark, playing all around Lockrose getting sent back to the sheds bowled off stump. He scored 9 off 12 and the Stags were 103/4 after 15.1 overs.

The first ball of the next over Clarkson immediately went for the wog to cow scoring 22 off 26 getting bowled top of off peg by Luke Georgeson. The Stags without a boundary in 38 balls were 109/6 after 16.1 overs.

The Stags finished on only 133/6 after looking at a total of 180 to start the inning, Angus Schaw finished on 20 while Randell was on 6. The Volts required a steady run chase only needing 6.7 an over.

No messing around from Dale Phillips to start striking at over 300 to start the inning to continue his master stroke of a season scoring 35 off 11 until he tried a Steve Smith esqe tennis shot which went up and was caught at mid-on. The Volts were 41/1 after 2 and Dale Phillips put his name on the radar to be selected by the Blackcaps in all 3 formats.

Ruben Clinton went for 12 being promoted to number 3 with Max Chu being ill, he got knocked over top of off by Ticker after 12 got hit in the over. The Volts were 82/2 after 5.5 overs leaving near no hope for the Stags.

The thrashing didn’t stop from the Volts with Jamal Todd making his maiden T20 50 off only 28 balls with Foxcroft making 23 off 11 closing out the inning, winning by 8 wickets and scoring at a run rate of 13.86 well on their way to a score of 240+.

The Volts play on Tuesday at the Basin Reserve vs the Firebirds while the Stags play the Aces on Wednesday in their away match that was rescheduled from the Eden Park Outer Oval.
