Plunket Shield: Round 2 - Day 4 Wrap Up

Day 4 of the Plunket Shield gave Northern their second victory of the season whilst Otago defended the day to hold Canterbury to a draw in Christchurch.

END OF DAY 4: Auckland all out 184/10. Northern 295/10 (81.1). Auckland 161/10 (47.3) with Quinn Sunde making 35 and Matt Fisher taking a career-best six wickets. Northern 51/1 (4.1) with Tim Seifert and Henry Cooper knocking off most of the runs.

The rest of the Auckland batters (Simon Keene, Adi Ashok, Danru Ferns, and Matt Gibson) could only add 23 runs to the overnight score, as Matt Fisher picked up his second FC fiver and best figures of 6/45. Scott Kuggleijn finished off with the wicket of Ferns to gain three wickets.

Tim Seifert was promoted to the top of the batting order and formed a fast partnership with Henry Cooper to get some quick runs in the chase of 51.

Seifert was the only wicket to fall, Ferns picking him up for 24 before Cooper (18*) and Jeet Raval (6*) got the job done in 4.1 overs.

CANTERBURY VERSUS OTAGO

RESULT: MATCH DRAWN

END OF DAY 4: Canterbury 313-9 (Dec). Otago 184-10 (61.3). Canterbury 333/4 (91) (Dec). Otago 254/9 (109.2) with Jamal Todd making 64. Kyle Jamieson also picked up four wickets.

The Otago side had a lucky start to the day with a 30-minute ground delay before Matt Bacon and Thorn Parkes went out to the crease.

It was going to be a day with not many runs and a lot of defending being done. Parkes only lasted 2 overs into the day and Bacon lasted 10 overs, Otago being 5 down.

Max Chu and Jamal Todd were key for Otago to get the result they did. Chu saw off 110 balls to make 38 runs and Todd made his first FC 50 ending on 64 from 177 balls.

Jake Gibson’s defence lasted 49 balls and when Duffy departed four overs later, Canterbury would’ve thought they were within a chance of taking the spoils. Their luck got even better when Todd was dismissed next over.

This left Jarrod McKay and the injured Dean Foxcroft the task of seeing off around 28 overs, but ultimately it only ended being around four overs, as the rain came and forced the game to be drawn with Cole McConchie and Foxcroft shaking hands at 6:11 pm.

Otago would count themselves lucky to not have been defeated as Kyle Jamieson had taken three wickets during the day along with Fraser Sheat who grabbed his 100th FC wicket.

Canterbury XI: Zak Foulkes, Matt Boyle, Henry Nicholls, Cole McConchie ©, Leo Carter, Mitch Hay (WK), Michael Rippon, Kyle Jamieson, Angus McKenzie, Fraser Sheat, Michael Rae. (12th: Dylan Hunter)
