Plunket Shield: Round 2 - Day 3 Wrap Up

Day 3 of the Plunket Shield provided Wellington with a victory in Nelson through some spirited bowling by James Hartshorn. Canterbury looks to be heading to victory in Dunedin after piling on the runs. Northern Districts will be hoping that they can get back onto the field tomorrow after rain washed out most of the day's action.

NORTHERN DISTRICTS VERSUS AUCKLAND ACES END OF DAY 3: Auckland all out 184/10. Northern 295/10 (81.1) with Brett Hampton, Joe Carter and Jeet Raval all making fifty. Adi Ashok took 7 wickets. Auckland 138/7 (39.2) with Quinn Sunde making 35 and Matt Fisher having four wickets.

There was little play in Auckland on the third day as ex-tropical Cyclone Lola hit Aotearoa and especially the Auckland region.

However in the time that was available, Northern capitalised on this as they took 4 wickets in the 22.2 overs that were completed.

Matt Fisher picked up his first early on in the day as he had Robbie O’Donnell edging behind for 18 before Sunde (35) and George Worker (16) fell to Scott Kuggeleijn.

Zak Gibson then took his first wicket, 4 overs before the end of play as Ryan Harrison fell victim to him.

Adi Ashok and Simon Keene will return to the crease on Day Four with Auckland leading by 27 runs.

CENTRAL STAGS VERSUS WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS RESULT: WELLINGTON WIN BY 172 RUNS

END OF DAY 3: Firebirds 201-10 (63.1). Central 169-10 (64.1). Wellington 324/10 (104.5) with Nick Kelly top scoring with 98 and Gareth Severin making 77, Randell and Bracewell with three wickets each. Central 184/10 (58.4) with Ajaz Patel making 49 and James Hartshorn taking four wickets.

Early wickets in the day were what the Stags needed and they did just that. Severin (77) and McLachlan (8) both fell in the first session and meant the home side were able to pick up all the remaining wickets in the second session. Doug Bracewell picked up three wickets and Brett Randell also added one wicket to his overnight tally to finish on figures of 3/45 (15).

The Wellington bowlers broke the opening partnership early, Greg Hay (9) and Brad Schmulian (14) both gone before the 10 over mark, with Nathan Smith picking up both wickets.

Following the tea break, Wellington kept piling on the pressure as the Central side quickly fell to 106/7 with James Hartshorn picking up the the four wickets of Tom Bruce (26), Josh Clarkson (2), Bracewell (4), Randell (2) all falling victim.

Ajaz Patel (49) and Dane Cleaver (47) then fought back well for the Stags as they put on a strong partnership of 68 to make the score look a lot better than it actually was.

CANTERBURY VERSUS OTAGO

END OF DAY 3: Canterbury 313-9 (Dec). Otago 184-10 (61.3). Canterbury 333/4 (91) (Dec) with Cole McConchie making 108 and Mitch Hay 82*. Otago 73/3 (38) with Jacob Cumming making 29. Wickets for Kyle Jamieson, Zak Foulkes and Michael Rae.

Cole McConchie was the standout for Canterbury on Day Three as he picked up his 9th FC century in a great display of batting alongside Mitch Hay who made his 9th FC 50, his 6th in 6 innings against Otago.

The Otago bowlers toiled away hard but had little reward with Jacob Duffy (2/70), Jarrod McKay (1/71) and Jamal Todd (1/25) the only players to pick up wickets.

The partnership between McConchie and Hay was what gave Canterbury the upper momentum and they took this into the bowling innings. The five Otago batters that batted in the second and third sessions were never really able to get settled. Luke Georgeson fell for 18 from 94, Jacob Cumming 29 from 66 and Dale Phillips 19 from 34.

Thorn Parks (2*) and Matt Bacon (2*) will open for Otago on Day Four as they look to defend out the day and claim an unlikely draw.

Kyle Jamieson, Zak Foulkes and Michael Re will all be looking to add to their wickets in the innings so far and have been ably supported by Fraser Sheat 0/8 (7) and Angus McKenzie 0/2 (7).
