Day 2 of Plunket Shield Round 1 kicked off with runs galore at Eden Park, 19 wickets to fall at the Basin Reserve and a declaration at Seddon.
NORTHERN DISTRICTS VERSUS OTAGO VOLTS
END OF DAY: Northern Districts all out 376-9 (Dec) with Sandeep Patel’s 145 (186) and Joe Carter’s 94 (133) extinguished by Jacob Duffy & Matt Bacon’s 3-fers. Otago 19-2 (17) going into Day 3.
Northern Districts started the day with night watchman Joe Walker and captain Jeet Raval at the crease. Raval was the first victim of the morning to fall, nine overs into the day. Otago then had their second the next over.
Sandeep Patel and Joe Carter then went about their business putting on a crushing 193-run partnership, bringing Northern Districts right back into the game.
Carter departed in a very tight runout for 94 (133) having brought up his 19th FC 50.
Sandeep Patel was able to bat well and whilst he didn’t have much lower-order support he did make it to 145 (186) before falling victim to Matt Bacon. This was Patel’s maiden FC century and set a good platform for Northern.
Declaring on 376 from 88.2 overs, Otago still had 17 overs left in the day that they would need to see out with the bad.
This didn’t go quite to plan for them as they ended up losing both openers, Luke Georgeson for 6 (39) and Jacob Cumming for 4 (34).
Northern Districts XI: Jeet Raval ©, Henry Cooper, Sandeep Patel, Joe Carter, Katene Clarke, Ben Pomare (WK), Scott Kuggelijn, Brett Hampton, Kristian Clarke, Neil Wagner, Joe Walker. (12th: Matt Fisher)
Otago Volts XI: Matt Bacon, Max Chu (WK, VC), Jacob Cumming, Dean Foxcroft, Luke Georgeson, Ben Lockrose, Jarrod McKay, Thorn Parkes, Dale Phillips, Jamal Todd (FC Debut). (12th: Jake Gibson)
AUCKLAND ACES VERSUS CENTRAL STAGS
END OF DAY: Stags 509-8 (Dec) with Tom Bruce and Josh Clarkson recording 80+ scores, Aces’ Adi Ashok with 4-141. Auckland on 139-5 (48) as Sean Solia leads on 68*.
Having impressed on Day One, Greg Hay was not able to add to his overnight tally as he departed for 115 (284).
Just when Auckland thought they might’ve had a chance to make inroads into the CD side, their dreams were crushed as the Stags middle order put on some great striking of the ball.
Captain Tom Bruce and power hitter Josh Clarkson went about their usual business for the CD side, with the pair making fifties each.
Bruce made his 33rd FC 50 from 98 balls and ended on 81 (134) whilst it took Clarkson only 64 balls for his 4th FC 50 who ended on 83 (87).
Dane Cleaver also made a quick fire 63 (69) before CD declared on 509/8.
Adi Ashok's bowling was one of the main highlights in the Auckland side as he took 4/141.
Just when things couldn’t get any worse for the Aces, their batters also crumpled.
Blair Tickner took the first wicket of the Stags season and this opened up a bit of batting collapse for Auckland who went from 34/1 to 48/3, Tickner removing Will O’Donnell for 17 (39), Quinn Sunde 8 (9) and Robbie O’Donnell 2 (16).
George Worker provided minimal middle-order assistance alongside debutant Cam Fletcher, but both fell before the end of the day.
The Stags will be relying on their bowlers to knock over Auckland early so that they can look at possibly enforcing the follow-on.
Auckland Aces XI: Will O’Donnell, Sean Solia, Quinn Sunde, Robbie O’Donnell ©, George Worker, Cam Fletcher (WK), Finn Allen, Simon Keene, Adi Ashok, Ben Lister. (12th: Ryan Harrison).
Central Stags XI: Greg Hay ©, Jack Boyle, Brad Schmulian, Tom Bruce, Dane Cleaver (WK), Josh Clarkson, Doug Bracewell, Brett Randell, Ajaz Patel, Blair Ticker, Ray Toole. (12th: Curtis Heaphy).
WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS VERSUS CANTERBURY
END OF PLAY: Wellington finished 1st innings on 325 all out, Zak Foulkes cinching a 4-fer. 3 wicket hauls for Ben Sears, Peter Younghusband and Nathan Smith left Canterbury 156 all out. Firebirds are 6 wickets down for 91 runs going into Day 3.
The Firebirds weren’t able to add much more to their 1st innings total, James Hartshorn’s 18 runs took Wellington to 325 before Zak Foulkes struck to take his 4th wicket of the game and his best FC figures (4-43).
Canterbury were underwhelming with the bat: Michael Rippon’s 31 (40) was the top score. Foulkes was dismissed on the first ball after edging Ben Sears to keeper Callum McLachlan, with his captain Cole McConchie following behind not too long after.
Nathan Smith was key in dismissing the middle order, including Rippon who was caught out in the slips.
Sears took Mitch Hay’s wicket caught and bowled in what would be his final victim of the innings - his 3rd for just 41 runs off 12 overs.
Legspinner Peter Younghusband cleaned up the Cantabrian tail in his 2.1 overs, all caught in the deep to leave Ed Nuttall stranded for 2 runs and Canterbury 156 all out.
Wellington’s 2nd innings was of similar quality, finishing the day on 91-6. Muhammad Abbas continued with his fine form - scoring 57 in the first outing - picking up 36 runs with 8 fours. He finished not out, alongside Younghusband.
Foulkes will be key going into Day 3, having picked up 3 Wellington wickets already and will seek plenty more.
Canterbury XI: Zak Foulkes, Dylan Hunter (FC Debut), Cole McConchie ©, Leo Carter, Matt Boyle, Mitch Hay (WK), Michael Rippon, Angus McKenzie, Fraser Sheat, Michael Rae, Ed Nuttall. (12th: Ben Russell)
Wellington Firebirds XI: Troy Johnson, Nick Greenwood, Gareth Severin, Nick Kelly ©, Muhammad Abbas, Callum McLachlan (WK), Nathan Smith, Peter Younghusband, Ben Sears, Michael Snedden, James Hartshorn. (12th: Tim Robinson)
