Plimmer Stars with Bat, Knight and Patel perform well with Ball

NZXI: Bella James, Izzy Gaze, Bella Armstrong, Georgia Plimmer, Flora Devonshire, Olivia Gain, Abby Gerken (WK), Rosemary Mair, Leigh Kasperek ©, Nensi Patel, Ocean Bartlett, Gabby Sullivan, Kayley Knight

Pakistan: Muneeba Ali Siddiqi (WK), Sadaf Shamas, Shawaal Zulfiqar, Omaima Sohail, Nida Dar ©, Natalia Parvaiz, Fatima Sana, Umm-e-Hani, Najha Alvi, Nashra Sandhu, Diana Baig, Waheeda Akhter

Pakistan got off to a great start with Diana Baig dismissing Bella James (1) inside the first over. Gaze then scored three boundaries off Fatima Sana’s over before Armstrong was out for four in the fourth over.

Izzy Gaze then fell in the next over to Nida Dar, the New Zealand XI now on 25/3 inside the first five overs.

Flora Devonshire and Georgia Plimmer played a crucial partnership and never went under five an over throughout with both players showing signs of their attacking attitude. They reached a fifty partnership in 34 balls, Plimmer making 23 runs and Devonshire 22 showing that they were both contributing equally.

Devonshire was dismissed in the 12th over for a run-a-ball 24 as Nashra Sundhu picked up her first wicket of the day.

Plimmer and Otago youngster Olivia Gain batted together for just over three overs. Plimmer made 50 runs in the 15th over. It was made in only 33 balls, including four 4s and a six. She was out however in the next over with Sundhu grabbing a second wicket.

The New Zealand XI batters attacked right to the end of the innings with Gain making 28 off 15, stumped by Najiha Alvi off Dar’s bowling and Mair getting 17 off 11 with Alvi picking up a catch of Waheeda Akhter’s bowling.

Abby Gerken finished not out on 11 whilst Leigh Kasperek was not out on five.

The New Zealand XI made 168/7 from their 20 overs with Plimmer making 52 and Gain 28. Akhter, Dar, and Sundhu all grabbed 2 wickets each.

Just like Pakistan, the New Zealanders took an early wicket with Shawaal Zulfiqar falling victim to a caught and bowled by Nensi Patel for 6.

Sadaf Shamas was only able to add four runs to the score, Gabby Sullivan getting her to edge behind Canterbury teammate Gerken behind the stumps.

Omaima Sohail and Muneeba Siddiqui added 26 runs in 4.1 overs, taking the Pakistan side to 65/3 (9.1) when Sohail fell to Patel for 14.

Siddiqui fell three runs later for a well-made 32 (31) knock including four 4s.

Natalia Parvaiz and Nida Dar were tasked with trying to get some runs on the board and push Pakistan into a position where they may be able to chase down the required total.

However, when Parvaiz and Dar were both bowled by Kayley Knight, it stopped the Pakistan innings with only bowlers left to bat.

Fatima Sana and Najiha Alvi added 19 runs for the 7th wicket, Knight grabbing her third of the day when she got Sana out for 11.

With three overs left to go, it was increasingly unlikely that Pakistan would be able to get to the target and this was true, as they fell 28 runs short, despite a Diana Baig quick cameo of 13* (4) at the end.

Siddiqui top scored 32 (31) while Knight and Patel both picked up figures of 3/19.

The sides also played a super over at the end of the fixture. Pakistan made 10 from the over and the Kiwis also matched this as Nensi Patel hit the last ball of the over for four. This led to confusion between the umpires and players about what to do.

They ended up having another super over which resulted in the New Zealand XI making 9 and unfortunately for both sides, Pakistan also made 9 runs as Abby Gerken made a runout on the last ball to secure another tie. Luckily for the players, the umpires decided that they wouldn’t have a third super over!
