Pakistan Clinch Victory in Super Over to Win Third ODI

WHITE FERNS VERSUS PAKISTAN - HAGLEY OVAL, CHRISTCHURCH

RESULT: MATCH TIED - PAKISTAN WIN THE SUPER OVER BY 3 RUNS

Pakistan has taken a thrilling victory in the third ODI in Christchurch with Bismah Maroof’s 68 (86) and Aliya Riaz’s 44 from 84 proving vital in Pakistan’s innings.

Choosing to bat first, the Kiwis didn’t get off to a fast start as they only scored 23 runs in the powerplay with Izzy Gaze falling for 9 (28).

Suzie Bates wasn’t able to carry on her excellent form in the series as she fell to Nashra Sundhu for 24 from 40.

Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr tried to speed up the New Zealand run rate with Devine showing some real intent in her 29 from 32 before she was bowled by Ghulam Fatima.

Kerr showed some real fight in her 77 from 87 and only 20 of her 77 runs went for fours, showing the fact that there was a lot of running for the batters in the middle. Following her wicket, Georgia Plimmer could only last 8 balls and add 5 runs to the score.

New Zealand soon found themselves at 198/6 when Hannah Rowe was run out by Aliya Riaz for 11.

Jess Kerr and Maddy Green added 40 runs for the seventh wicket and then Lea Tahuhu found herself runout on the penultimate ball of the New Zealand innings as the Kiwis looked to push for as many runs as they could at the end.

Aotearoa finished on 251/8 from their 50 overs with Kerr’s 77 and Green’s 65* being the top scores. Sundhu and Fatima’s 2 wickets were the highlights for Pakistan.

Like New Zealand, Pakistan got off to a slow start with only 11 runs being added in the first 5.2 overs. Muneeba Ali was the first to be dismissed for 5 (18).

A 17-run seventh over pushed Pakistan up to 37/2 when Sidra Amin was out for 24.

Riaz and Maroof’s 101-run stand was the standout for Pakistan. Whilst it did come from 143 balls, the visitors were able to keep the run rate at a chaseable rate.

Jess Kerr made the breakthrough for the home side with a brilliant catch and bowled before a quick 35-run partnership between Maroof and Fatima Sana kept Pakistan in the game. Fran Jonas then removed Maroof from 68 from 86 and Pakistan now found themselves four wickets down.

Sana fell at the end of the 42nd over for 36 from 22 with her side still requiring 54 runs in the last 8 overs.

Natalia Parvaiz added a solid contribution of 26 from 23 alongside Najha Alvi who finished on 23* from 26.

Whilst the lower order of Umme Hani (4), Nashra Sundhu (1), Sadia Iqbal (0), and Ghulam Fatima (1) didn’t add many runs, they had the job of turning the strike over and getting Alvi on strike.

Going into the last over needing eight runs to win, Pakistan soon found themselves needing 6 to win from the last two balls as Tahuhu had bowled two dots and conceded two singles.

However, for Pakistan, they found some great luck with four byes being conceded and then they managed to run a single off the last ball to tie the game.

Pakistan finished on 251/9 with Maroof top scoring with 68 and Riaz making 44. Tahuhu took figures of 2/30 (9) and Amelia Kerr took 2/54 (10).

Pakistan got off to a great start in the super over with Riaz getting a four from the first ball. A dot then occurred on the second ball before two twos were run on the third and fourth ball. A leg bye was taken on the fifth ball and then Sana along with Riaz ran a quick two off the last ball to finish on 11.

New Zealand got off to a bad start in their batting turn with Amelia Kerr falling on the second ball of the Super Over for 0 (1). With 10 runs needed for a win from the last three balls, Devine went big and got a six to make the equation four from 2 balls. She did try and go for the big shot on the fifth ball but was caught by Riaz. New Zealand finished on 8/2 and therefore Pakistan won the Super Over by 3 runs.
