Otago, Canterbury, Auckland All Book Finals Spots in Ford Trophy

The finals spots have been confirmed with the Ford Trophy round robin finishing.

Northern Districts vs Canterbury:

Northern got off to a bad start with the bat as they lost Katene Clarke in the first over.

Jeet Raval and Bharat Popli were then able to see them through the powerplay without further loss until Ed Nuttall had Raval for 25 and Popli fell to Angus McKenzie for 20.

Joe Carter was the only one to provide a score of note in the rest of the batting lineup.

Debutants Josh Brown and Ben Pomare both fell to Fraser Sheat for ducks, whilst Henry Cooper (8), Kris Clarke (4), and Tim Pringle (7) were the other players to fall.

Joe Walker (19) added some runs at number ten alongside Matt Fisher (9*) but that managed to get Northern to 160/10 from 44.5 overs.

Chad Bowes (15) fell for Canterbury was the first wicket to fall for Canterbury, but some early hitting by Henry Nicholls allowed the visitors to get off to a good start.

Mitch Hay was only able to add ten runs before falling to Pringle, just like Bowes had done as well.

Stand-in captain Leo Carter (33*) and Nicholls (85*) saw the Kings to a solid eight-wicket win with 14 overs left in the innings.

Otago Volts vs Wellington Firebirds:

Luke Georgeson vs the Wellington Firebirds was what the fixture should be called.

The former Wellington player has caused havoc against them this season for Otago with figures of 5/37 in the game at Wellington only nine days ago.

However, he had different plans at Sir John Davies Oval as he stormed through the Firebirds lineup with figures of 5/11 from just 6.3 overs.

The openers of Callum McLachan (6) and Nick Greenwood (3) were able to see Wellington through to 13/0, but they fell in the space of three balls to Andrew Hazeldine and Jacob Duffy respectively.

From here on it was all up to Georgeson and Matt Bacon with the pair taking eight wickets between them.

The Firebirds went from 41/4 to all out for 57, to record the lowest ever domestic List A score in New Zealand history.

Muhammad Abbas was the only one to provide any resistance with his 11 runs being the only score in double digits.

In his final game for Wellington, Ollie Newton picked up with the wicket of Jacob Cumming for 16 whilst Nathan Smith had Georgeson for 27.

Dean Foxcroft (5*) and Dale Phillips (6*) saw the Volts to the target in just 9.5 overs. The victory meant they ended up grabbing the hosting rights to the elimination final.

Auckland Aces vs Central Stags:

The Stags got off to an exceptional start with the bat through Brad Schmulian and Curtis Heaphy as they put on 114 runs for the opening wicket.

The wicket of Heaphy for 44 did mean the Stags had a collapse with Dane Cleaver (5), Josh Clarkson (4), and Doug Bracewell (5) all falling in quick succession of each other.

Will Clark provided some resistance with 44 and alongside Schmulian’s 107 it saw Central to a total of 243/10. Bayley Wiggins (6), Ajaz Patel (0), Blair Tickner (1), and Ray Toole (2) were the other batters to fall for the Stags with Jayden Lennox making 14*.

Auckland had a shaky start with Finn Allen (1) and Martin Guptill (7) falling early.

The middle order for Auckland was however able to stand up and put some scores on the board to allow the Aces to push their way to victory.

Mark Chapman added 32 whilst Robbie O’Donnell added 51.

Will O’Donnell was able to be in at the end to allow Cam Fletcher’s 32 and Louis Delport’s quickfire 18* from nine to be enough for the Aces a five-wicket win and book a spot in the elimination final against Otago. Will O’Donnell ended on 90*.
