Nicholls, Young Star With Bat After Sarkar’s Incredible Knock in Second ODI

New Zealand have taken victory in the second ODI with Henry Nicholls and Will Young starring with the bat after Soumya Sarkar had gone massive in the first innings.

Bangladesh had early troubles in the opening ten overs of their batting innings with Anamul Haque Bijoy (2), Najmul Hossain Shanto (6) and Litton Das (6) all falling in the opening powerplay. Adam Milne grabbed Haque Bijoy whilst Jacob Duffy had the other two wickets.

After a duck in the first game, Soumya Sarkar proved instrumental in Bangladesh’s innings with 39 of the first 71 runs coming off his bat. After a 36 run stand in just over 7 overs, Josh Clarkson was able to touch the ball and run out Tawhid Hridoy at the non striker's end to send him on his way for 12.

Wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim joined Sarkar in the middle and the pair put on a 91 run stand for the fifth wicket. With the runs coming hard to find and Bangladesh sitting at about 4.5 runs per over. Jacob Duffy, Rachin Ravindra, Adam Milne, and Adi Ashok all kept the Bangladesh batters at bay with their tight bowling through the middle stages.

Rahim however perished in the 35th over, with Duffy getting him to edge behind to wicket-keeper Tom Blundell for 45 from 57.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz joined Sarkar in the middle and they combined for a quality fifty run partnership, with Sarkar being the more aggressive batter making 33 of the fifty runs in the stand.

Ashok picked up the scalp of Hasan Miraz in the 44th over and this gave him his maiden ODI wicket for Aotearoa.

From here on, Sarkar went massive for Bangladesh with his 150 runs coming in 144 balls, taking 28 balls to get from 100 to 150.

The wicket of Sarkar came in the final over as he tried to go for a big shot off Will O’Rourke but found the hands of Henry Nicholls to finish on 169 from 151.

O’Rourke then picked up Rishad Hossain for 6 and Hasan Mahmud for a first ball duck to bowl Bangladesh out for 291 in 49.5 overs.

The Kiwis got off to a fast start with the bat with Rachin Ravindra (45 from 33) and Will Young (89 from 94) combining for an opening stand of 76 runs in 11 overs going at just under seven runs per over.

Debutant Rishad Hossain however took a good catch on the boundary to have the wicket of Ravindra.

Henry Nicholls joined Young in the middle and had an incredible stand of 128 runs in 129 balls with some great cricket shots played by both batters.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib was one of the bowlers that the Kiwis targeted as he went for 51 runs in his six overs.

When Young fell in the 33rd over, it brought captain Tom Latham to the crease to join Nicholls who was building a solid score so far.

Just as Nicholls was edging closer to a century, he found himself having to walk back to the pavilion for 95 from 99 with Shoriful Islam grabbing the wicket.

Tom Latham (34*) and Tom Blundell (24*) saw their side home with 3.4 overs to go.
