McFadyen Goes Big, Sparks Show Dominance With the Ball, Green and Shahri Prove Vital Under Lights

Wellington, Auckland, and Otago have all backed up yesterday's wins in the HBJ Shield. Otago Sparks vs Northern Districts

Northern again got off to a slow start with the bat with Emma Black striking early to have Natasha Wakelin trapped in front for two. Molly Loe soon had Nensi Patel out for nine and Northern two down in the powerplay.

Caitlin Gurrey and Jess Watkin were able to steady the innings as they put on a solid 63-run stand for the second wicket. Otago youngster Chloe Deerness did manage to get the breakthrough with Gurrey falling for 48.

Watkin then fell two runs later to Eden Carson for 18 and left Northern in trouble.

Sam Barriball and Eimear Richardson tried their best to get Northern back into the game but the Otago bowlers were persistent with Loe being the star. She grabbed Richardson for 23 and finished with figures of 2/21 from her ten overs.

Marina Lamplough could only add five runs to the score as she fell to Deerness and Barriball added 34 before falling to Felicity Robertson.

Jesse Prasad added 20 runs to the score at number nine, while Holly Topp added 11 with Suzie Bates and Robertson getting the wickets respectively.

Lucy Boucher was run out by Black for a duck and Shriya Naidu finished on 3*. Northern were bowled out for 194.

The Otago openers got their side off to a strong start with Saffron Wilson making 31 and Bella James 25. Wilson was the first to go as she was trapped LBW for 31 and then James was out to Lamplough for 25.

Caitlin Blakely and Robertson then went about business to see Otago well to within the target through a 73-run stand for the third wicket until Patel got Blakely edging behind to Topp for 62, her 10th List A 50.

Robertson and Polly Inglis finished the innings off with Robertson making 49* and Inglis 8* to give Otago a 7 wicket in more than 17 overs remaining.

Wellington Blaze vs Central Hinds

The Central opening bowlers were able to grab a couple of wickets inside the first 11 overs with Rebecca Burns falling to Rosemary Mair for six and Anna Gaging bowling Amelia Kerr for 14.

Georgia Plimmer and Jess McFadyen caused trouble for the Central bowlers for around ten overs with a 52-run stand but once again the Hinds did manage to break them when Ocean Bartlett had Plimmer for 32.

Kate Chandler played well alongside McFadyen and they looked like they would be in for a long stay at the crease. However, just as Chandler was building into her work, Gaging grabbed a second wicket of the day as she bowled Chandler for 27.

Leigh Kasperek wasn’t able to follow up on yesterday’s performance as she only added two runs before falling to Bartlett.

McFadyen was stubborn and did pass the 100-run mark, but not before Caitlin King was out LBW to Georgia Atkinson for 15.

Nicole Baird and McFadyen managed to see Wellington through to 271 with McFadyen making 122* and Baird a career-best 32*.

Central got off to an excellent start with the bat through Nat Dodd (76) and Atkinson (44). But Phoenix Williams got the first when Atkinson hit one straight to Kasperek and then Xara Jetly had Dodd for 76.

Emma McLeod and Hannah Rowe were also able to add some consistency to the Hinds batting innings, however, they weren’t able to score quickly enough and when McLeod went for 37 in the 41st over, the Hinds still needed 72 to win.

On a day when the Hinds needed the middle order to stand up, they didn’t. Mikaela Greig and Flora Devonshire only managed three each with Jetly and Baird getting the wickets.

Claudia Green only got two before falling to Baird whilst Kerr struck with the big wicket of Rowe for 64 and the game had slipped away from the Hinds. Ashtuti Kumar was also run out by Kasperek for six.

When Kerr bowled Gaging for a golden duck the Blaze were able to pick up a 24-run win.

Canterbury Magicians vs Auckland Hearts

Auckland had early success with the ball as Molly Penfold struck in the fourth over to have Abby Gerken out for nine.

Frankie Mackay and Kate Anderson were then able to stand up for their side with a solid 65-run partnership for the second wicket.

Anderson was scoring freely and looking like she could be potentially in for a big score but edged behind to Izzy Gaze off Josie Penfold’s bowling for 38.

Fran Jonas then struck in the following over with Izzy Sharp out for a golden duck.

Jacinta Savage (4) and Jodie Dean (7) both fell to Rishika Jaswal not long after and Canterbury was in serious trouble at 98/5.

Mackay and Missy Banks did manage to add a few runs for the sixth wicket as they put on 69 runs before once again Auckland managed to get a wicket as Jonas had Mackay caught and bowled for 71.

Banks and Lea Tahuhu then carried on the work before Banks was out to Maddy Green for 35.

Tahuhu played aggressively in the latter stages of the innings as she blitzed her way to 67* from 42. Laura Hughes was run out on the final ball of the innings for 13 with Canterbury posting 260/8.

Auckland’s openers were able to get off to a strong start through an opening stand worth 114 runs with Saachi Shahri being the aggressive player by far as she added 71 of the first 100 runs. She was eventually bowled by Sarah Asmussen for 75.

Cae Pedersen and captain Maddy Green carried on the work that had been laid out between Pedersen and Green before once again Canterbury struck as Pedersen found herself out to Mackay for 43.

Prue Catton could only add two runs, out to Mackay and Anna Browning only added one as she was out to Banks.

Izzy Gaze saw Auckland nearly through to victory as she made 49 before finding herself out to Asmussen, it was Gaze’s highest List A score as well.

Green made sure that Auckland was able to get the win with a 70* and Josie Penfold finished on 4* as Auckland took a five-wicket win.
