Kohli's 95 guides India to close victory over New Zealand at Cricket World Cup

Updated: Nov 14, 2023

New Zealand: Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult

India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Surya Kumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj

India won the toss and sent New Zealand into bat at the picturesque ground of Dharamshala. Devon Conway and Will Young opened the batting for New Zealand.

Conway saw off some quality bowling from Jasprit Bumrah in the first over before Young showed some intent from his first twelve balls taking a couple of boundaries off Mohammed Siraj and Bumrah.

With dot balls building pressure for Conway, he was eventually caught off a sharp catch by the bowling of Siraj as he departed for a duck from nine balls.

One of New Zealand’s better players this tournament, Rachin Ravindra joined Young in the middle. The pair would’ve been hoping that they could replicate the partnership that they’d shared against Afghanistan. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to as it lasted three overs before Shami picked up the wicket of Young for 17 from 27.

Aotearoa were on the ropes sitting at 34/2 after 10 overs, the last over of the powerplay did include Siraj bowling four wides.

From here the Kiwis did keep the pressure on India and were scoring off the majority of the balls in their overs, taking to the spin of Kuldeep Yadav especially. Jadeja however was able to keep the score tightened a tad and not concede many boundaries from both Ravindra and Mitchell.

The pair worked well in the middle not only making boundaries but also running well between the wickets.

Ravindra fell just as he looked like he would be able to push onto a big score as he made 75 from 87.

Captain Tom Latham only lasted seven balls as he departed from 5, out LBW to Yadav. Glenn Phillips joined Mitchell in the middle with just over 10 overs to go and the need to push on to make a big total.

Mitchell made his fifth ODI hundred from 100 balls and he looked like the player that Aotearoa needed to stay in till the end of the innings. Sadly for Phillips, he couldn’t quite push on today as he only made 23 from 26, with Yadav picking up his second victim of the game.

Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry were able to contribute very little to the score as they only made six runs between them.

Shami then removed Mitchell with one ball to go and Lockie Ferguson was run out on the final ball as New Zealand were all out for 273 from their 50 overs. Mitchell was the best batter for New Zealand making 130 and Ravindra made 75.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened the batting for India having the task of chasing down 274 to give India a rare victory of Aotearoa at ICC events.

Both players got off to a good start with India sitting nicely at 63/0 following the powerplay.

Ferguson was the first bowler to strike for the Blackcaps as he bowled Sharma for a well-made 46 from only 40 balls. He then found his second victim in his next over, this time Gill was caught by Daryl Mitchell for 26 from 31.

After what had been a good start for India, they had now come to a bit of a halt. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were tasked with the restoration job.

Trent Boult was brought back into the bowling attack and this worked a trick as he removed the dangerous Iyer for 33 from 29.

KL Rahul joined Kohli at the crease and they were both scoring with ease throughout the majority of their partnership, boundaries tending to come off most overs.

First ball that Mitchell Santner was introduced back into the attack he struck, trapping Rahul LBW for 27.

The ever-dangerous Surya Kumar Yadav could only last four balls as he was run out by Trent Boult for two.

After a fast start, India were now starting to run out of batter but outstepped Ravindra Jadeja who was able to bat well with Kohli for the rest of India’s innings and the pair took them home to victory.

Kohli was dismissed by Matt Henry with five runs still to go, but it was a little too late for a New Zealand victory.

Kohli top-scored for India, making 95 from 104. Sharma contributed 46 and Jadeja made 39* from 44 balls. Ferguson picked up two wickets for Aotearoa while Boult, Henry and Santner all took one each.
