Former League star Johnathan Thurston to feature in T20 Black Clash

Johnathan Thurston has been named as Team Cricket’s Wildcard for the T20 Blackclash to be played at Bay Oval on January 20, 2024.


Thurston played 323 NRL games for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the North Queensland Cowboys. He is also 21st equal on the all-time NRL player appearances. Thurston co-captained the North Queensland side to an inaugural NRL premiership in 2015.


His electric career featured him playing in all of Queensland’s 24 games, in their eight-year winning streak of the State of Origin. He kicked a total of 923 goals in his career which featured his trademark right to left hook.


He also amassed 602 points from 18 tries, 264 goals, and two field goals across the State of Origin, and also played 38 test matches for the Kangaroos.


Thurston was a handy cricketer during his schooling days as he opened the batting and bowled first change. “I’ve always been a massive cricket fan so the chance to get out there and have a crack alongside some sporting legends is amazing.”


Mark Waugh was his favourite up he stated and wants to model his game off him. He also said that he is a massive fan of Brian Lara and can’t wait to see what he can do up close and in person.


He was recently inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame, showing that he is regarded as one of the best sportspeople in his country.


Thurston has a rich NRL history of awards taking home the Clive Churchill Medal for a Player of the Match display, including an 83rd minute match-winning golden point drop goal to defeat the Brisbane Broncos in 2015.


He also became the first four-time winner of the Dally M Medal, the NRL’s award for the season’s best player and the first three-time winner of the Golden Boot Award.


Team Cricket captain, Daniel Vettori stated that “JT is a proven winner so we’re stoked to have him on board for Team Cricket.”
