Final Men's Contract Offers Announced

The respective associations announced the final contract offers for the men’s domestic sides yesterday.

Three players who featured at the ICC Men’s Under 19 World Cup earlier this year were rewarded with first-time offers, Zak Cumming (Otago), Ewald Schreuder (Central Districts), and Snehith Reddy (Northern Districts) all showing their skills and being rewarded.

Central Districts had only announced 13 of their 16 available positions, with teams required to name a minimum of 10 in the first round and a maximum of 15, something all other teams decided to do.

Angus Schaw, the long-time serving Hawke’s Bay captain has been rewarded with a first-ever contract for the men in green. Schaw is joined by Manawatū batter Mason Hughes, who played two T20s for the Stags in 2022 and has been offered a contract for the first time.

Schaw does boast experience at the domestic level, being capped across all three formats for the side, having made a memorable 114 against Northern Districts in his only first-class match. He’s also featured in three one-day fixtures, making 28 runs across his two innings, and bowled twelve balls in his one and only T20 fixture against the Auckland Aces in 2023.

Schreuder, who took nine wickets at the Under-19 World Cup, moved from Northern Districts, whom he appeared for in two one-day matches last summer. He becomes the second left-arm pace bowler in Central’s side, joining Ray Toole.

Another representative from the Under-19 World Cup is 17-year-old Snehith Reddy. His 147* in the first match of the competition helped New Zealand to a 68-run victory over Nepal in East London. Whilst the rest of the World Cup didn’t go as planned for Reddy, making scores of 7, 0, and 11, it is clear that he does possess talent, especially as his ability to chip in with the ball will be vital.

Losing Tim Pringle to injury for the season and Joe Walker only on a casual contract, his right-arm off-break will be useful throughout the season.

Cam Paul has been snapped up by Canterbury having featured in two one-day matches, with figures of 3/17 on debut helping his side to a 63-run win against Wellington. Paul was ruled out of the U19 World Cup last year, with a dislocated shoulder that he suffered during the national tournament.

With nine bowlers, or bowling all-rounders named in Canterbury’s 16 contracts, it is unclear how likely Paul will get to feature over the summer. However, as shown on his debut, when he is given the shot he can well and truly shine.

Following a superb finish to last summer’s season, taking 6/46 and 8/71, Jordan Sussex has been offered a contract for the first time. Sussex has only played three first-class games, two at McLean Park in Napier, and one at Kennards Hire Community Oval in Auckland but has taken 19 wickets at an average of just 14.31.

Sussex will be looking to add to his first-class appearances, along with potential debuts in both the Ford Trophy and the Dream 11 Super Smash.

Wellington’s final contract has gone to top-order batter Sam Mycock. He had an outstanding season in A matches for Wellington, being the top scorer out of all six major associations with 485 runs.

His 2 hundreds and 2 fifties, had him with the most fifty-plus scores. With Rachin Ravindra’s major rise into the Blackcaps, there is a need for someone to bat in that top order for the men from the capital.

Zac Cumming is the third New Zealander Under 19 World Cup representative to receive an offer in the second round, joining his brother, Jacob in the 16 Otago contracted players.

He grabbed three wickets at the World Cup and has also represented Otago A in three games alongside the Otago Under-19 side. Cumming is in his first year out of High School, joining ex Otago Boys’ High School players, Ben Lockrose, Max Chu, and his brother in the side.
