Clarkson, Ashok, and O’Rourke in Line to Match NZ Debuts as Bangladesh Squad Announced

Three players have been called up to the Blackcaps squad squad with Josh Clarkson and Will O’Rouke earning maiden call-ups to the side.

Adi Ashok has made his T20I debut for the side but has yet to feature in an ODI side. He will feature in games two and three with Ish Sodhi being included only for game one as he has a break before the busy international summer.

Breakout star from the ICC Cricket World Cup, Rachin Ravindra is included alongside World Cup squad members: Tom Latham (who will captain the side), Tom Blundell, Mark Chapman, Kyle Jamieson, Ish Sodhi and Will Young.

Many of the senior players are being rested for this series after a busy winter or are currently injured. Selector Sam Wells said that the series again Bangladesh was a great opportunity to introduce some new faces to the One Day unit.

He also highlighted the fact that Aotearoa had a busy winter of cricket.

“After a very busy winter of touring, it will be exciting to have the team back playing at home.”

“The volume and intensity of the cricket over the winter this year means we need to strike a balance with workloads for players, particularly those that play multiple formats.

“That need for balance also creates opportunities and it’s great to be able to give some players their first call-ups.”

Clarkson, O’Rourke and Ashok have all earned call-ups because of their impressive summers of recent form in domestic cricket and also the NZ A environment. Wells commented on the three players and stated that:

“Josh is someone who, while still only young, has played over 150 matches for the Stags, developing his skills with bat and ball to become a consistent contributor.

“Adi and Will are both still fresh to domestic cricket but have been impressive in their early efforts and stepped up well this year in the New Zealand A matches against Australia A.

“Both offer valuable skill-sets, Adi with impressive control as a young leg spinner, and Will with natural bounce and variation as a tall pace bowler.”

Due to the current ongoing series in Bangladesh, it was decided that many senior players would be rested so they could rest for the upcoming series against Pakistan, Australia, and South Africa.

Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips, and Devon Conway are the players being rested. Michael Bracewell (Achilles), Matt Henry (Hamstring), Lockie Ferguson (Achilles), James Neesham (Ankle), Ben Lister (Hamstring), and Henry Shipley (Back) were also not considered due to their ongoing injuries. Trent Boult made himself unavailable for the series.
