Centrals come out on top of wickets galore in Northern Māori battle

Central Districts Māori were assisted by Ocean Bartlett’s 3-8 and 15* in a scrappy 4-wicket win against Northern Māori, despite Topp’s 31.

Once more Macy Lyford and Olivia Clark were challenged in facing the new batters in Camera Ikuia and Sam Barriball.

They brought the goods in the powerplay for CD, claiming Ikuia as she launched one to Jasmine O’Dell off Clark for 7. New batter Ella Farrell dared to take on Clark’s quick arm in the field, inevitably losing her wicket.

Barriball miscued one off Lyford to Kerry Tomlinson for 10 in an attempt to get the score rolling for her side, though left Elle Archer and Holly Topp with a mammoth rebuild from 32-3.

Molly Noema-Barnett was brought on providing an instant impact. She trapped Archer LBW on her penultimate delivery of the over.

India Bartlett struggled with extras in her first spell, but was dearly rewarded with Jessica Binge’s wicket.

Meddy Hyde and Topp began to form a partnership in recovery from 40-5 (8), seeking to go after CD’s pacers and capitalising on the no-balls gifted to them.

Atkinson decided she needed a change in attack, so brought herself on to dismantle ND’s rebuild. Her decision paid off, Hyde misreading her looping legspin to depart for 16 (17).

Ocean Bartlett was the gamechanger for CD. Though it looked near impossible for Northern Māori to come back from 66-6 after 12, Bartlett ensured their innings was dead and buried.

Working in tandem with Atkinson, the pair removed 3 more batters cheaply. ND wouldn’t make it to the final over, Ocean striking in the 19th to remove top scorer Topp (31 off 24) leaving Northern 91 all out. She collected 3 for 8, sneaking in a maiden to limit the runs.

With 92 the target, Northern Māori weren’t prepared to go without a fight.

CD grabbed 33 runs inside the powerplay through Kerry Tomlinson and Reese Drager. The latter was taken out of the game LBW by Elle Archer, with Tomlinson (20 off 18) quickly following her back after Hyde cleaned her stumps up.

Hyde didn't stop there, assisting in a run-out to send Madison Greenaway out for a diamond duck.

Ocean Bartlett powered her way through the majority of the innings alongside numerous partners; Sam Mackinder scored 13 before she was bowled by Anderson with Clark and O`Dell offering small cameos towards the back end.

CD got to their 92 target with 10 balls remaining, going undefeated so far in the Māori Wāhine tournament.
