Updated: Oct 24, 2023

Kiwi Cricket Kōrero host and writer Vincent Jones writes on the Central Hinds vs Canterbury Magicians Women’s Super Smash 2022–23 fixture (originally written 2/1/23)

Toss: Canterbury Magicians won the toss and elected to bowl

Central Hinds: Nat Dodd, Emily Cunningham, Jess Watkin, Mikaela Greig, Rosemary Mair, Hannah Rowe, Flora Devonshire, Georgia Atkinson, Ocean Bartlett, Melissa Hansen, Claudia Green

Canterbury Magicians: Kate Anderson, Nat Cox, Fran Wilson, Abby Gerken, Amy Satterthwaite, Jacinta Savage, Lea Tahuhu, Laura Hughes, Missy Banks, Gabby Sullivan, Sarah Asmussen

First Innings: The Magicians had an excellent start to the game, only letting a single through in the first over. Nat Dodd then departed in the second over, with a good catch by Missy Banks from her own bowling, with Dodd departing for 5. Hinds captain, Jess Watkin, was the next one to the crease but she didn’t last long as her middle stump was smashed out of the ground by Lea Tahuhu. Emily Cunningham was the next one out, caught by Gabby Sullivan for 2, giving Banks her second wicket of the game. Tahuhu and Banks were keeping the game tight for the Magicians, restricting the Hinds to only 31 runs from the powerplay. Sullivan was thrown the ball after the powerplay, which ended up being a good move by Canterbury as she had Mikaela Greig out for 13, caught by Kate Anderson. Hannah Rowe and Rosemary Mair were tasked with resurrecting the Hinds innings. The partnership between these two was only able to last two overs as Mair was stumped by Laura Hughes from the bowling of Sarah Asmussen for 7. Youngster, Flora Devonshire was promoted up the order and got her first Super Smash runs, with a single taken from Asmussen’s bowling. The Hinds were going to need a big finish for the last 10 overs of their innings if they wanted to have a chance of winning, due to being 47/5 at the halfway mark. Rowe started to show some intent taking Kate Anderson for 14 runs off an over, including back-to-back fours and a six as well. Sattherwaite picked up her first wicket of the game in the next over with Devonshire having to depart for six. Asmussen removed Atkinson in her next over for two, the Hinds now reeling at 74/7. Once Rowe was dismissed after being caught by Satterthwaite off the bowling of Tahuhu for 30, it looked like the innings would be over shortly. Melissa Hansen was out LBW next ball for a golden duck, the Hinds having Ocean Bartlett and Claudia Green to try and add a couple of runs at the death. They were only able to manage a partnership of six before Green departed for 5, LBW by Sullivan. The Hinds rolled 88. Rowe contributed 30, whilst Greig added 13 with the bat for the Hinds. Tahuhu took three wickets, Asmussen, Sullivan and Banks all got two and Satterthwaite with one.

Second Innings: Anderson and Nat Cox opened for the Canterbury side. The first few overs were quiet, with two coming from Watkin’s opening over and three from Green’s. Mair also only conceded four from her first over, the Magicians on 9/0 after three overs. Devonshire was given the ball, but went for 11 runs and then Rowe went for eight. The Magicians openers were starting to get into their work and ended the powerplay on 36/0. The Hinds bowlers were keeping the run scoring down but weren’t able to pick up wickets. It did not help the Hinds that Bartlett thought she had the breakthrough, but unfortunately for her, it turned out to be a waist-high full toss, meaning it was no ball. Atkinson was able to finally get the first wicket of the game with Anderson being caught by Watkin for 33 from 41. English pro, Fran Wilson came out to the crease at number three and played a nice shot first up for four. Cox and Wilson weren’t looking to many attacking shots, they were just nudging the ball around and trying to get ones and twos. Green picked up the wicket of Cox in what turned out to be the last over, being caught by Hansen for 30. Abby Gerken came to the crease, and hit a two, four and then took a single to give the Canterbury side the victory at Pukekura Park. Lea Tahuhu was awarded the Dream 11 Game Changer Award for her 3/17. Anderson top scored with 33, whilst Cox contributed with 30. Green and Atkinson both took one wicket.
