Canterbury Magicians all-rounder Jacinta Savage has announced that she has retired from cricket.
Savage played 172 games across both formats for the Magicians, representing the side in 97 List A matches and 75 T20 matches between the 2011/12 season and the 2023/24 season.
She made her List A debut against Auckland in 2011 but didn’t bat or bowl in the match. Savage did make 11 runs in the following game against the Central Hinds at Cornwall Park in Hastings. Across her career in the 50-over format, she ended up 40 wickets, including best figures of 6/18 against Northern Districts. In that match against ND, she became the second player to score a 50 and take five or more wickets in a List A match for Canterbury.
Between 2018/19 and 2023/24, Savage grabbed at least one fifty each season with two being made in 2019/20. This was a great response by her with the bat after not playing in either format during the 2017/18 season.
Savage managed a high score of 42 across the T20 format and best bowling figures of 4/26 against Auckland.
She also featured against the West Indies for Canterbury during their tour in 2014 and then again against Pakistan in 2016.
Having started as a bowling all-rounder, Savage found herself behind the stumps with the gloves between the 2014/15 and the 2018/19 season, before returning to being a bowling all-rounder.
In 2020, Savage was rewarded with a New Zealand Cricket development contract alongside Jess Watkin, Fran Jonas, Caitlin Gurrey, Bella Armstrong, Skye Bowden, Rebecca Burns, and Eden Carson. These contracts were all about giving up-and-coming female cricketers a chance to develop their games with the best coaching resources, as highlighted by the Head of Women’s High Performance, Ant Sharp.
