Auckland Shine, CD and Wellington Gain Victories on First Day of Women’s U19 Nationals

Day one of the Women's Under 19 National Tournament has been completed with victories for Auckland, Central Districts, and Wellington.

Auckland U19 vs Northern Districts U19

Auckland had a solid start with the bat through Rishika Jaswal and Neena Wollaston with an opening 53-run stand inside the first fifteen overs. They saw off the early bowling of Aria Mischewski, Miah Smith, Brittany Jenkins and Dayle Anderson to have 36 runs on the board at the end of the powerplay.

Anderson then struck to have Jaswal out for 27 and then Wollaston in her next over for 14.

Kate Irwin and Brooke James did a fantastic job with the rebuilding of the Northern innings following the loss of the two quick wickets.

Irwin and James put on a steady 82-run stand in just 100 balls showing the intent of both batters. As the partnership between them progressed they attacked the bowling of Megan Pearson, Ananya Sharma, and Tash Wakelin with some of their overs going at more than a run a ball.

Wakelin did make the breakthrough as she bowled Irwin for a quality innings of 57 from 62 balls.

Auckland captain Elizabeth Buchanan joined James at the crease and they carried on the intent that the former partnership had set. With 10 overs left in the innings, Auckland were sitting at 178/3 and the partnership was starting to look threatening.

Dayle Anderson's 5/24 against Auckland:

When Pearson broke the stand with the wicket of James for 58 from 82, it caught the rest of the Auckland batting lineup off guard as they crumpled to 209 all out from 194/3.

Buchanan went in the following over for 20, Mischewski getting the wicket and leading to a wicket in every over for the rest of the Auckland batting innings.

Anderson had Jess Smith (2), Sophie Court (3), and Anika Todd (2) whilst Mischewski had the wickets of Anika Tauwhare (0) and the final wicket of Holly Lightbourne (6) to have the Auckland innings ended with three balls left in the innings.

Northern had a great start to the batting innings with nine runs coming in the first over with Wakelin hitting all nine runs from Leah Watton’s bowling. Todd conceded two runs off the second over before Watton took the wicket of the dangerous Wakelin for nine.

Todd then had Amelia Harvey (1) and Jessie Canty (0) leave the Northern side at 12/3.

After a couple of single run overs, Sharma fell with the score now sitting at 15/4.

Northern gained a couple more runs through Elle Archer and got a run from Todd’s fourth over, but then it was up to Court to dismiss Eve Wolland (0) and Pearson (0) to leave ND reeling at 18/6.

Todd then had Archer (2) and Smith (0) before Court fell to Jenkins and Anderson was the last wicket to fall with Northern being all out for 19 in 11.1 overs.

Otago U19 vs Central Districts U19

Central had a horrible start with the bat as Reese Drager (2), Catherine Hockly (2), Emma McLeod, and Vanessa Taylor (4) as Louisa Kotkamp, Zarah Moana took the early wickets and Molly Mason-Galletly/Caitlin Scherp had a run-out.

Abby Treder and wicketkeeper Sophie Campbell shared a solid 59-run stand for the fifth wicket to help resurrect Central’s innings.

Chloe Deerness however proved vital with the ball as she grabbed Treder for a quick 40 from 51 and then had Aniela Apperley for 6 in her next over.

Central’s batting mainly rested on Campbell with the Otago side taking wickets with the score at 124, 129, and 154.

Katelyn Walton had the wickets of Ella Hogan (16) and Grace Foreman (8) whilst Kotkamp had Gretel Fairbrother (4).

Campbell and Catherine Hollard put on 53 runs for the last wicket to take Central up to 207/10 with Kotkamp getting Hollard for 12 from 30. Campbell finished not out on 68.

Hannah Wilson and Abby Fookes got their side off to a good start with the bat in an 18-run opening stand. Foreman picked up the first wicket of Wilson for 5.

Hollard then broke into the Otago middle order as she sent Fookes (20), Isy Parry (12), Deerness (2), and Scherp (2) all back into the pavilion and the Otago side had crumpled to 68/5 in just 20 overs.

Georgina McEwan and Hannah O’Connor shared a quality 54-run knock for the seventh wicket to take the Otago side up past the 100-run mark when McEwan was run out by Taylor for 34.

The wicket of O’Connor would be key for the Central side as she was building a nice innings but when McLeod struck on the last ball of the thirty-ninth over to have O’Connor for 28 it seemed likely that the Central side would be taking victory. Otago now at 129/8

Taylor bowled Moana four runs later for a two-ball duck, the Central side just needing one wicket for a win.

However, they nearly found themselves on the losing side due to Kotkamp and Mason-Galletly sharing a partnership worth 48 runs for the final wicket. With the number of balls left decreasing, Kotkamp found herself having to just smash the ball and was undone by Foreman on the last ball of the penultimate over.

The wicket of Kotkamp gave Central Districts a 27-run win.

 Wellington U19 vs Canterbury U19

Hannah Francis and Neha Ramanathan got Wellington off to a solid start with the willow as they nearly saw right through the opening ten overs. Ruby Makeham struck in the last over of the powerplay with the wicket of Ramanathan for 3.

Ashleigh Henderson and Francis carried on the momentum until Abigail Hotton had Wellington two down when she got Henderson for seven.

Hotton soon had a second wicket with the dangerous Francis being trapped LBW for 35. Yssa Cullen then struck with the big wicket of Rachel Bryant, Wellington’s captain.

A fightback was laid between Esme Olney-Boyd and Dhriti Girish for the fifth wicket but the Canterbury bowlers were able to keep taking wickets at the right time as Sammy Borcoski had two wickets in quick succession, Onley-Boyd and Ava Conroy gone for 26 and 5 respectively.

Isla McKenzie and Girish had a 62-run partnership for the seventh wicket, a crucial knock that would end up being match-defining.

Makeham had Girish out bowled for 35 and then Mckenzie was run out soon after for 22 by Cullen/Darcy-Rose Prasad.

Eva Hay and Anya Birmingham saw Wellington to a total of 239/8 from 50 overs.

Canterbury had a terrible start with the bat as they fell to 33/3 inside the first 10 overs. McKenzie struck first with Sacha Arnold out for four before Emma Parker had Prasad and Borcoski for six and zero respectively.

Izzy Sharp and Maggie Martin rescued the Canterbury innings a little, dragging them to four down for 83 runs in the eighteenth over when Hay had Martin for 12 and soon after Girish had Niamh McKenzie for a run-a-ball 16.

Sharp and Hotton led a fightback for Canterbury and it was critical for one of them to be there at the end if Canterbury wanted victory.

Just as she was getting closer to a century, Isla McKenzie had Sharp trapped leg before for an excellent knock of 89 from only 77 balls.

Hotton added 30 runs from the batting position of number eight but Katriel Thomas (6), Makeham (9) and Cullen (5*) all were not able to add any substantial score with Canterbury ending on 200 all out in 40.5 overs.
