Aces Go Top With Domination at the Number One; Hearts Take Close Win Over Sparks

Both Auckland sides picked up victories in the Super Smash against Otago with a couple of players scoring 70+ runs.

Otago Volts vs Auckland Aces:

The Volts won the toss and elected to bat on a used pitch at Eden Park.

The Volts started very poorly with Hamish Rutherford going for 11 and getting caught by Jock McKenzie on debut with the bowling off Danru Ferns.

Gibson didn't last much longer going for 0 off 2 balls getting caught behind by Cam Fletcher with Ben Lister taking the wicket off his bowling.

A partnership started to form with Max Chu and Dean Foxcroft creating a 40-run partnership off 5.5 overs until Max Chu went for 30 being caught and bowled by Sean Solia after 17 balls.

Ollie White went for 3 off the bowling of Jock McKenzie being caught by the captain Robbie O'Donnell.

LLew Johnson went not long after for 9 coming off the bowling of Jock McKenzie being caught by Danru Ferns.

Dale Phillips also went for Jock McKenzie's bowling for 9 getting caught behind by Cam Fletcher and the Volts were 99/6 after 15.3 overs.

Ben Lockrose came to the crease and forged a 33-run partnership with Dean Foxcroft until he got out being bowled by Danru Ferns for 22 off 13.

Hazeldine went for 4 in the same over being bowled by Ferns. Travis Muller got run out for 0 by Lister while Duffy got run out for 1 by Solia. Dean Foxcroft was not out for 45 off 47 and the Volts ended with 138/10 off 19.3 overs.

Worker went early getting caught by Gibson off Travis Muller's bowling he went for 5.

Solia went for 6 off Hazeldine's bowling getting caught by Duffy.

Robbie O'Donnell went for 10 soon after Jacob Duffy's bowling was caught by Travis Muller and the Aces were 33/3 after 5 overs.

However, there were 2 saviours for the Aces. Cole Briggs and Cam Fletcher. No one in the Otago bowling attack could get this pair out. They combined for a 105-run partnership with Fletcher scoring 74 and Briggs scoring 37.

The Aces won with 2.1 overs to spare scoring 139 off 17.5 overs.

Auckland Hearts vs Otago Sparks:

The Sparks won the toss and elected to bowl on a third game-used pitch.

Izzy Gaze went in the first over after facing 4 dot balls before the wicket. Emma Black picked up the wicket after some great fielding from overseas player Linsey Smith.

Saachi Shahri went for 7 off the bowling of Hayley Jensen after trying to play a hook shot and skying it up to Emma Black at fine leg.

For the next 14 overs, no wicket came as Maddy Green and Prue Catton built a 103-run partnership and the Hearts were in business.

Prue Catton then fell for 39 getting bowled Molly Loe. Green carried on the work that had been set out already but Eden Carson got the wicket of Anna Browning for eight and then ran Bella Armstrong out first ball.

Josie Penfold was also run out by Smith in the penultimate over of the innings with Green and Molly Penfold seeing Auckland through to 146/6 with Green finishing on 77* and Penfold on 1*.

Bella James fell in the first over with Bree Illing picking her up for a golden duck.

Otago had a big third over with Felicity Robertson hitting three fours in the over and then one in the following over before finding herself to be bowled by Molly Penfold for 18 from nine.

Things went even worse in the fifth over with Polly Inglis falling to Fran Jonas for one.

Caitlin Blakely and Suzie Bates seemed to be building a solid partnership to get the Sparks back on track as they put on a 24-run stand until Jonas got her second wicket of the day and the massive wicket of Bates for 18.

Olivia Gain could only last four more balls as she went for one and Otago were in serious trouble.

However, with Hayley Jensen joining Blakely in the middle, they were able to steer Otago into a position of a possible comeback win.

Jensen was able to survive through to the 15th and get the Sparks past the 100-run mark until Anna Browning picked up the crucial wicket of Jensen for 24.

Linsey Smith and Blakely were able to take on the Auckland bowlers and put them in a position of needing 19 from the last two overs.

Blakely struck a four off the last ball of the penultimate over to put Otago in a position of needing 10 to win from the last over. She also brought up her maiden Super Smash 50 with the four.

However, Auckland youngster, Bree Illing bowled an amazing final over with a wicket maiden as Auckland took victory by nine runs.
